So let this be a warning for all you “in the know” who have parents who just love this whole internet thing. My mom and dad are online, and they are easy targets because they have very little computer experience and everything sounds “too good to be true!”.
Today scam involves selling items on Craigslist. Here is the flow of the scam:
- Step 1: You would like to get rid of the red barn in your backyard so you place it for sale on Craigslist.
- Step 2: You receive an email from Judy Miller asking about it.
- Step 3: She’s ready to buy, but can’t inspect it because she’s too busy.
- Step 4: She’ll be sending the money by Paypal.
- Step 5: They sent more than necessary and Paypal has a hold on the funds.
- Step 6: Send the leftover to my pickup agent by Western Union.
That’s it! You just lost a quick $600 or more.
What to Look Out for on Craigslist Scams
Okay – here’s the number one rule of scams. NEVER Western Union money to people you don’t know no matter how legit or how many times you have talked to them. NEVER EVER! It’s a scam.
Second – how many times have you bought a used item without looking at the item? (especially a $2500 red barn).
Third – There is always an “overage” that will need to be paid to the scammer FIRST before you can receive your funds.
Here are the actual Craigslist email transcripts:

I AM SOOOOOOO HAPPY I DID MY RESEARCH BEFORE I SENT THE MONEY! TY FOR POSTING YOURS!
Why do people think that answering Craigslist adds and under false pretenses keep getting away with it. I too was answered by an add I have on Craigslist not only by Judy Willson but also a Karen Foley, with the same message.
People pay attention…………when it sounds too good to be true………..IT IS.
How I stopped them was asking for their phone number, their complete name and address and the name of the shipping company.
NEVER GIVE OUT ANY INFO…………………NEVER……….always check here on Google………….
“Judy Willson” emailed me TODAY. I ripped her a new one just after googling her email and reading this. another person has also attempted this with me…his email is gregwooddy4@gmail.com
DON’T GET SCAMMED!!!!! Don’t send any money to any movers or anyone through any service. pay in cash in person!
i was chatting with someone he had promised to come see me but he had something that needed to be cleared a package and suppose to send western union to this sean watson, i was leary so i googled him and found this article im so glad i did tyty for letting me learn my lesson.
That’s why I do it.. I’m so good at spotting a fake – I sometimes wanna post it here immediately.. (but I have to wait for the scam!) LOL
I was selling a fractional interest in a plane for $55,000 and got this (probably Nigerian dude) “Judy Willson” character with a dubious request for my Paypal address before even calling me or scheduling a time to meet and see the plane! Dummies. I wish I knew how to report these con artists, but Craigslist doesn’t block this very well.
