A Few Bad Apples Give Business a Bad Name

I was having a back and forth on a local forum when someone responded with this that I thought was worth sharing:

“What scares me about this is painting all major corporations with such a broad brush. There is a perception among some people that “all large corporations are evil”. Yes, evil enough to employ millions and evil enough to supply benefits and pension plans. Do some corporations abuse their power? Absolutely. As do Democrats and Republican senators. As have Presidents on both sides. (Which each side then vilifies, depending on their party affiliation).

However, saying that “all corporations are evil” or even that “most corporations are evil” is to say that all liberals, conservatives, Americans, Iranians, etc. are evil, because of a few bad apples.

Someone who complains that large corporations have a big advantage forget history. Large corporations were once small businesses. Google didn’t exist just a few years ago. Now its a multi-billion dollar corporation. Same with many other companies, created in garages and from kitchen tables.

That opportunity still exists today. There are kids in school today who will start a new company from scratch and generate millions, maybe billions. However, those kids don’t create a wholesome small business — and then click the “evil” switch once its a multi-billion dollar company.

It’s usually the media, a few “bad apples”, and this odd hatred of the wealthy (jealousy?) that make some people believe that all corporations are bad.

So, back to original question: Is the supreme court’s ruling bad for America? Well, maybe. Corporations who understand that both Democratic and Republican politicians are for sale (equally) are more likely to spend money getting their “friendly” candidates in, to forward their agenda. So, as Obama has said, he’s going to take some action on this. However, a MAJORITY of corporations who never lobby – and spend their time building their business and putting food on the plates of their employees – will be unaffected.

However, I think we do a dis-service by lumping every corporation… every CEO… every business… into the “bad” category, simply because they make money.

(I think the sames goes for paining the wealthy with such a broad brush. I get tired of people bashing the wealthy. If you ran all of the wealthy off… and they moved to a different country… you’d have to say “Good-Bye” to the lifestyle you enjoy now, because the government would have to close-up shop. Without taxes on the wealthiest people and corporations, where would the billions come from to pay for welfare, medicare, and a host of other public services. And now, the wealthy and corporations will probably also be giving us the benefit of healthcare. So let’s be a little kinder to those who give us so much through their hard work.)”
