I’ve been reading where affiliates are making a load of cash with cheap mobile advertising, and so I wanted to test a few ads..
1. I wanted to test a few products that would related specifically to a mobile user (i.e. ringtones, apps, etc).
For this experiment, I wanted to use Google Admob. The interface is missing a lot of key elements that allow you to drill down to target your market. ADMOB does not let you drill down at all.
Mistake #1!
So I set a few campaigns at 5,000 clicks each.
I figure at 5,000 clicks – you can get a true reading of how much traffic comes to the site, how long they stay, how many clicks you get, how many affiliate sales you make, etc etc…
Results:
So within an hour, I had 5,000 clicks with Admob! It took less than an hour to get 5,000 clicks!
And…
The average user stayed for 0.6 seconds.
The average user clicked 0 links.
The average user purchased 0 products.
The average user opt-ed in 0 times.
The average user…
5,000 x 0.1 penny = $50 down the drain.
I thought about it further because I play Words with Friends, and I see those ads at the bottom.
Everytime I go to shutdown the site, my finger accidentally clicks on the ad that is at the bottom of the screen… right above the iPhone button.
Hmmmm…
So you’re telling me that AdMob is capitalizing on the “I accidentally clicked the ad” market. True Story!

Hey Kit:
Enjoyed your Mobile Marketing article that you also tested with
your own money. I just attended an Affiliate Conference out
here in my local area and there seem to be a bit of hype about
Mobile Marketing, because there are millions of phone users
who are constantly checking something on their mobiles. These
presenters even did a comparison with the huge advertising
billboards at Times Square, NY. The viewers weren’t looking up
at the billboards, but were looking down at the mobiles. Thanks
for sharing that test with us.

You wanna know who is making money. It’s NOT the advertiser.
1. It’s the person who created the cell phone apps/games which display the ads.
2. It’s the ad network.
I think there is a better way to sell things to the mobile market.
1. Apple has figured it out with one click purchases of music and apps.
2. Amazon has figured it out with the instant download of books.
3. Game makers have figured it out by offering virtual purchases inside their game.
The mobile market wants to see something – press a buy button – and that’s they have it or they know it’s on the way. So what’s the problems:
1. Customers have to store their data in their iphone for the “one click purchase”.
2. Customers have to see item – and big GET THIS ITEM button.
That’s it. Apply this to training, coaching, education, clothing, electronics, hair, makeup, razors and you have another hit.
Thanks!
Kit
