Google Wave – Is it for Marketers?

Can you give some examples of how to use it for marketing?
I feel like I am being obtuse here because I have been hearing about how the Wave is better than sliced bread as of late, and am struggling to see mass applicability.

I can see small businesses (under 10 employees and not dealing with confidential data) possibly employing it. Large companies are another ball of wax though as internal and external protocol of handing information is going to limit the use of 3rd party applications that are on the cloud.

Even take a home association – the board would want to share a single file that had list of people who paid dues. As checks are received it is updated and all the others can that. This would be a beneficial tool. I can see that.

But I am just struggling on many other uses.

Hiya Johnny!

Thanks for the response to my posting about the Google Wave.  You’re question is, “How can marketers use this?”

It’s probably too early to tell right now – but I’m hoping it will take the same concept of social networking and get rid of the “Myspace Effect!”  Using it to add friends who aren’t really interested in anything you have to say, but having a million followers is “cool”.

Each “wave” will be tied a specific microniche.  When you join a “wave” you get in on the conversation or collaboration or discussion about that microniche. This makes it easier to direct your Google Adwords to much more targetted audiences. (and increase conversions)

Now go further – how can you get your website, product, brand, service into a Google Wave?  You invite prospects, buyers, consumers, fans of for your development, conversation, collaboration, fan meeting or product launches – and then, when you launch a product – you’ll be able to reach your buyers faster.  Google Wave will be MicroNiche Social Community Sites.

Hope this helps!

Onwards and Upwards,

Kit Elliott

Hi there. My name is Kit Elliott. I'm living proof that someone with ZERO marketing knowledge and ZERO programming/design experience can create a residual income online. I understand the struggle because I was stuck at ZERO for a long time, and after 1200 websites, membership sites, adsense sites, funny websites, and more - I understand the key components to building passive residual income. 1. Thanks for replying Kit!

Yes, that does help. Pointing the Adwords account to more specific audiences already talking about a specific niche would be huge.

As far as getting into a wave, if there was ever a reason to have a email list / subscriber list, that would be it. Being able to invite everyone who already follows you by choice and therefore is interested in your content would certainly be beneficial for a product development project. It will give them a sense of ownership in the process and most likely increase conversion once the product is delivered.

I guess it all goes back to the standard growth practices though since a Blog that has no readers will have a very difficult time finding applicable invitees.

I am very curious how the wave program will allow tangents / forks. If you had ever heard of the “Million Penguins” project a couple years back where Penguin publishing tried to do a Wiki to write a book where anyone could join and write/edit, it ended up with several “tribes”. Those that wanted to keep the current data and build from there, and then those who kept trying to highjack it and either replace the data or bring the story into a different track. Ended up being a great study on organization and leadership.

Thanks for the post, you have given more perspective on what can be done. I wasn’t planning on doing much with it, but I think I might grab my surf board now.
